Ok, it is that time of the year to enjoy a day at the park, zoo or your favorite museum. One of my favorite things to do is to spend a few hours in the park. Enjoying nature, reading a book, napping, staring up at the clouds and tasty picnic lunches. My husband and I have enjoyed this for years. So much, that our handy picnic blanket has finally started to show wear and tear.
Now that we have a little one we have less time for reading and more play time, but we still have time for those tasty picnic lunches. One of my favorite things to do is packing the picnic lunch. If you have kids, you know this is a lifesaver for a day out-n-about. Packing a picnic lunch can maximize a day of fun, and help save a few dollars. Most of the things I pack in my picnic lunch are things that are in my fridge on a daily basis.
Here is a list of my favorite things to pack for a picnic lunch:
- Sliced Fruit (apples, strawberries, grapes)
- Olives (favorite garlic stuffed and kalamata)
- Boiled eggs
- Sliced tomatoes
- Bell Peppers
Condiments: Ranch for dipping vegetables. Also, I keep a salt, pepper, and garlic mix on hand, which is tasty for the vegetables and boiled eggs.
No picnic can be completely zero-waste all the time but reduce waste where you can by using reusable containers. My favorite containers are the Cool Gear - EZ Freeze Collapsible Bento Box Lunch Container (Plastic), and U Konserve’s Nesting Trio (Stainless Steel). I have had these containers for over 4 years.
Let the entire family get involved in the packing and I hope you have as much fun with your picnic! Pack your plates, utensils, napkins and your blanket, and you're are good to go! Don't forget to pick up your trash and recycles before you leave so the next family can enjoy the park.
