The last 100 days of 2019 I did a sketch challenge. I have to say for the most part I carry my sketchbook and pens everywhere I go but this project really challenged me to make sure I drew something every day. I tried to at least set aside 5 or 15 minutes each day, posting the result on Instagram. It sounds simple, but it's harder than you think.
One way to stay motivated is to have friends join in on the sketch challenge. It really kept me going when I didn't feel like posting. Sometimes I just wasn't feeling the sketch I created was my best, but guess what: I posted it anyway. After all, these are just sketches!
This was also a great time to experiment with different pens, pencils and paper, and techniques.

What I do with my sketches
You might wonder what I am going to do with all these little sketches. Creativity doesn't stop with them, I now have lots of ideas for future projects. Some have the potential for cool pattern designs.
For example, inspiration can come from a single sketch. I was inspired to create more sketches that combine illustration with typography, to capture daily routines. These used the words Wake, Shampoo, Brush, Sleep in my illustrations. Once my sketch was complete, I scanned in the image, created a vector image and then created my step & repeat pattern. When complete I ended up with a fun pattern for fabric.
With a career as a graphic designer for many years, I have experience creating vector art and creating step and repeat patterns. This process comes easy for me but anyone can learn, and there are so many software programs for a beginner to get started. Skillshare is a good resource for beginners.
So if you need a boost in your creativity or just want to have some fun try a challenge of your own and remember to invite a friend to join. If you would like to see more from my 100 days of sketches, just follow me on Instagram. #100daysofsketching2019
